Emergency services were dispatched to the coast of Yaiza in Lanzarote yesterday afternoon (Friday), after an 86-year-old man was pulled from the water showing signs of drowning.
The Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received an alert at 4:45pm from staff at a local scuba diving centre, who are trained in first aid, and had managed to rescue the man from the sea and raise the alarm.
SUC medical personnel responded swiftly to the scene, and upon arrival they assessed the man’s condition, provided initial treatment, and transported him by medical ambulance to Dr. José Molina Orosa Hospital in Arrecife for further treatment.
The man’s condition was described as moderate at the time of transfer, but he is expected to make a full recovery.
Thanks to the rapid response from both the diving centre staff and emergency teams, a more serious outcome was avoided.
