A 60-year-old man has tragically died after drowning yesterday afternoon (Thursday) off the coast of Arrecife in Lanzarote. The incident occurred near the Avenida de la Mancomunidad, according to the Canary Islands’ Emergency Coordination Centre, CECOES.

The man was discovered unresponsive at the bottom of the sea by a swimmer from the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife at around 2:30pm, who raised the alarm. He was pulled from the water, showing clear signs of drowning and was in cardiac arrest.

A doctor who happened to be nearby immediately began performing CPR, assisted by members of the nautical club. They used a defibrillator provided by the club in an attempt to revive the man while waiting for the emergency services.

Shortly after, SUC medical personnel arrived, but despite all resuscitation efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Local and National Police were also deployed to the area as part of the emergency response.

This marks another tragic case in a worrying trend. The Canary Islands continue to report a high number of drowning fatalities, ranking second in Spain for such incidents.

Holidaymakers and residents are reminded to exercise caution when swimming, particularly outside supervised areas or when sea conditions are uncertain. Stay safe, and follow local guidance when enjoying the Canary Islands’ coastlines.
