Three earthquakes were recorded in El Hierro this morning, Tuesday, according to reports from the National Geographic Institute (IGN), in what experts describe as low-intensity seismic activity typical of the Canary Islands.

The tremors were detected offshore and occurred within a short time frame, with magnitudes ranging between 2.5 and 2.9 on the Richter scale. The strongest of the series, measuring 2.9, struck at 7:13am to the south-west of the island at a depth of around 39 kilometres beneath the seabed.

Earlier in the morning, another earthquake of magnitude 2.6 was recorded at 3:50am south of El Pinar, at a depth of 19 kilometres. A third tremor, measuring 2.5, followed shortly after 8:00am to the west of the island at a depth of 32 kilometres.

In addition, a smaller quake of magnitude 1.7 was also detected last night off the west coast of El Hierro, highlighting a brief sequence of seismic activity in the area. Despite the number of tremors, the IGN have confirmed that no damage or disruption has been reported.

El Hierro, like the rest of the Canary Islands, is of volcanic origin, and such low-level seismic activity is not unusual. The IGN continues to monitor the situation closely as part of its ongoing surveillance of volcanic and seismic activity across the archipelago.
