Fifteen-year-old Abbie Burns has pulled off a remarkable victory at the World Cup Skateboarding event in Vigo, defeating both the pre-competition favourite and an Olympic competitor.
Burns triumphed over Valentina Krauel, who was widely tipped to take the title, and Dutch Olympic skater Keet Oldenbeuving, showcasing her exceptional skill and composure on the board.
Her performance has been hailed as a major breakthrough, marking her as one of the sport’s brightest young prospects.
The young champion trains at the Extreme Center Club in Lanzarote, a hub for local talent where many young athletes develop their skills and push their limits in the sport. Burns, who lives in Tías and is identified as British while being a long-time Lanzarote resident, is now tipped for further success on the international stage.
The Canary Islands have produced a number of sporting stars who have excelled on national and international stages. Tennis player Carla Suárez Navarro from Gran Canaria became one of Spain’s most recognisable athletes, reaching the top 10 in the world rankings.
In football, David Silva from Gran Canaria enjoyed a glittering career with Manchester City and Spain’s national team, winning multiple Premier League titles and a World Cup. In water sports, bodyboarders like Alexandra Rinder from Gran Canaria have claimed world championship titles, while Olympic windsurfer Blanca Manchón has represented the islands with distinction.
Abbie Burns’ triumph adds skateboarding to the growing list of disciplines where Canary Islands athletes have made their mark.
The win in Vigo has already drawn attention from across the skateboarding world, and many expect this to be the first of many major titles for the rising star.
