Covid update: Gran Canaria has most new cases today with 112 of the 229 detected

The Ministry of Health has reported of 229 new cases of coronavirus today in the Canary Islands, 111 less than last Thursday when the total was 340. Of these 112 are in Gran Canaria, 86 are in Tenerife, 18 are in Fuerteventura, 7 in Lanzarote, 4 in La Palma, 1 in La Gomera and 1 in El Hierro. There has also been three Covid related deaths, two in Tenerife and 1 in Gran Canaria.

The incidence rates have continued to decrease and now the IA7 for the islands is 76.93 with only Fuerteventura above 100 and all the rest below, and the IA14 is 183.83 with all islands except Fuerteventura below 200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This continues to be the second best epidemiological data in the whole of Spain.

The number of active cases has dropped again to below 14,000 because of 559 medical discharges, and there are currently 376 Covid patients in wards and 95 in ICU, with 13,451 people in home isolation.

Regarding vaccination, the SCS have now administered over 2.9 million doses of Covid vaccines in the Canary Islands, and almost 75% of the target population over the age of 12 have been fully vaccinated. In fact, earlier today the Minister of Health for Spain, Carolina Darias, announced that the country is ready to start inoculating with the 3rd dose ‘booster’ jab, but is formulating a plan as to who will receive it first and when.
