Covid update: Only 131 new cases today as incidence rates drop again

The Ministry of Health has informed of 131 new cases today, which even though they are always lower on a Sunday, still shows a decrease over previous weeks. Of these 70 are in Tenerife, 47 in Gran Canaria, 10, in Lanzaote, 2 in Fuerteventura, and 1 each in La Palma and El Hierro. La Gomera was the only island not to have any new cases again today.

One positive is that active cases have stayed below 4,000 over the weekend. They are currently the lowest they’ve been since October last year when the second wave really kicked in, but were expected to increase again before tomorrow, but the fact they’ve stayed where they are is a good sign.

Another positive is the incidence rate over seven days (IA7) for the islands, which has now dropped to 55.61 with 1,210 new cases this week which is 21% less than last week. Many people are concerned that the rates are still high because of outbreaks in El Hierro, as their IA7 is 143.54 and their IA14 is 394.73. Although high, these don’t really affect the overall figures as it’s per 100,000 inhabitants and only just over 11,000 people live on the island, which is why it’s affected so much by Tenerife and Gran Canaria as in total 82% of the total population of the Canaries live in these two islands.
