Covid update: 82 new cases, active cases drop, hospitalisations drop

The data from the Ministry of Health continues to be good reading regarding the evolution of the pandemic in the Canary Islands. There have only been 82 new cases detected today against 444 medical discharges as active cases have dropped to just above 2,000 and Covid patients in wards has dropped to below 200.

Of the new cases today, Gran Canaria has the most with 32, followed by Tenerife with 31, there are 13 in Fuerteventura, 4 in Lanzarote, and 1 in La Palma. No new cases have been reported in La Gomera or El Hierro. The Ministry has also confirmed two more Covid related deaths in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The incidence rates for the islands individually are spread slightly, but the two biggest islands have an IA7 of 21 and 22, whereas Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are at 48 and 69 respectively. Yesterday no islands changed levels, but according to the Public Health review of the epidemiological data, Fuerteventura would not have changed anyway as indicators are still in Level 3.

It may have been possible for Gran Canaria to drop to Level 1, but the Governing Council meeting was focused on the situation in La Palma. Due to this, it is far more likely that next Thursday (September 30th), both Tenerife and Gran Canaria will be lowered to Level 1 at the same time, ahead of UK travel requirements changing on October 4th.

Regarding vaccinations, in Fuerteventura the SCS vaccination teams are continuing to vaccinate against COVID, and have started administering the third booster dose to residents of the Centro de Mayores Casillas del Ángel in Puerto del Rosario.
