Covid update: A 4-month-old baby dies from Covid in Gran Canaria

The Ministry of Health of the Canary Islands has reported the tragic news that a 4-month-old baby has died in hospital in Gran Canaria today after testing positive for Covid. The child did have a serious health problem, but the coronavirus affected their lungs, and despite trying everything paramedics couldn’t save their life.

They also reported of 118 cases today across the islands with 61 in Tenerife, 32 in Gran Canaria, 19 in Lanzarote, 2 in Fuerteventura, 2 in El Hierro, 1 in La Palma, and 1 in La Gomera. On a positive note the number of active cases in the archipelago has dropped below 2,500 thanks to 180 people being medically discharged, with 235 Covid patients in wards, 62 in ICU, and 2,199 in home isolation.

Latest vaccination updates show that the SCS have now administered 803,045 doses of vaccines, out of the 907,380 delivered to the islands, with 266,161 fully immunized with either two doses or the Janssen single dose vaccine.

This weekend anyone over 60 in Tenerife or Gran Canaria that hasn’t had a vaccination appointment so far can go to the mass-vaccination centres in Adeje, Santa Cruz and Las Palmas to be inoculated. Also any non-Spanish resident not registered in the health service can go to their nearest health centre and register to be vaccinated as soon as possible too.
