The latest data from the Ministry of Health reports of 192 new cases of coronavirus in the Canary Islands in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of people infected past 54,000 since the pandemic began. There was only one Covid related death registered, which was in Tenerife and takes the total to 751.
Once again Tenerife has the most new cases with 71, but it is proportionately less of the total due to spikes in other islands. Gran Canaria registered 54 new cases today, Lanzarote has 36, Fuerteventura 27, El Hierro 4, La Palma 1, and there were none in La Gomera.
The incidence rates for the islands have increased slightly as well today, due to the numbers of cases, but the number of active cases has dropped to 2,641 in the archipelago and continues to decrease in Santa Cruz and Las Palmas quite considerably (see below).
Outbreak in Tenerife Prison:
According to the Professional Association of Prison Officials in Tenerife, a Covid outbreak in module III of the Tenerife II Prison is now affecting 25 inmates who are infected with coronavirus.
One of the inmates tested positive last Monday, and despite the diagnosis and following all the protocol established by the health authorities, the virus had already spread through the module, infecting 24 other people. The inmates have been transferred to module I of the facility, while module III has been confined.
Arrecife gym screening of 2,700 people:
An apparent neglect in the prevention protocols in a gym in Arrecife is being blamed for the outbreak in a gym in Arrecife, which so far has seen 52 people test positive, but has now led to the mass screening of 2,700 people who all need to be tested.
To put this outbreak in context, it already represents 1% of all certified coronavirus cases in Lanzarote and La Graciosa since the beginning of the pandemic.
