Covid update: New cases jump to 141 increasing all data and incidence rates

The Ministry of Health has reported of 141 new cases of coronavirus today in the Canary Islands with 1,665 active cases, of which 23 are admitted to ICU and 189 remain hospitalized. In the last 24 hours there has also been two Covid related deaths of a 50 year old in Gran Canaria, and a 57 year old in Tenerife.

Once again the IA7 for the Canary Islands has increased, today to 37.23, and the IA14 is now at 69.99 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Individually all the islands have gone up, but Fuerteventura is the one moving in the wrong direction. Their data is now getting very close to that of Lanzarote, and they could be in danger of moving back in to Level 2 on Thursday.

Of the new cases today, Tenerife has added 92, Gran Canaria 36, Fuerteventura 8, Lanzarote 5, and there were none detected in the other islands. Tenerife’s data is bad again, and this week there has been 41 outbreaks on the island that are being tracked by the SCS. One of them has 23 people infected in a company linked to the food industry, the rest are family or social related. It has also been confirmed that the outbreak in the Tenerife Prison is now under control which has infected 43 inmates and members of staff, with only three prisoners now in quarantine.

The Ministry of Health are now asking anyone over the age of 45 living in Gran Canaria or Tenerife, to call for an appointment, and anyone else should apply through the website like 375,000 people have already done so. And in La Palma, anyone over 35 can call 012 for an appointment. Also, 70% of those over 50 have now had their first jab in the Canary Islands.

Yesterday the SCS set a new daily record of 28,485 doses administered in one day, and have requested to continue with vaccination overnight between 10pm and 8am as this would accelerate the economic recovery in the Islands. They estimate that 70% of the target population would be achieved by the middle of July if this is permitted.
