Covid update: August starts with 626 new cases and 3 Covid victims

The Covid pandemic has started August with 626 new cases and has claimed three more victims in the last 24 hours, an 83-year-old man in Gran Canaria, a 100-year-old woman in Tenerife, and a 74-year-old man in La Palma. All three had previous pathologies and were already in hospital. The total number of accumulated cases in the Canary Islands is now 80,530 with 14,497 active, of which 84 are admitted to ICU and 464 are in Covid wards.

Of the new cases, 315 are in Tenerife, 276 are in Gran Canaria, 23 in Fuerteventura, 6 in Lanzarote, 5 in La Palma, 1 in El Hierro, and none in La Gomera, meaning that over 94% of new cases are in the capital islands.

Regarding vaccination, the SCS have confirmed that the younger generation are continuing to go to centres to be inoculated without an appointment, and so far 61,059 teenagers aged between 12 and 19 years old have received their first vaccination, which represents 33.96% of the age group.

They have also confirmed that during the month of August the Canary Islands are expected to receive more doses of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines than in July, and they anticipate that there will be a "significant push" to vaccinate as many people as possible this month.
