Almost 50% of the target population in the Canaries are fully vaccinated

The latest figures show that the SCS have now administered 2,150,326 doses of Covid vaccines in the Canary Islands, with 1,287,258 people who have received at least one dose which is 65.65% of the target population over 12 years old, or 68.80% of the target population over 16 years old.

In addition, up until yesterday 963,455 people are fully vaccinated against coronavirus, which represents 49.14% of the target population over 12 years of age in the Canary Islands.

The Ministry of Health is also appealing for residents over the age of 20 in Tenerife and Gran Canaria to register for their appointment as soon as possible, and anyone over 16 in Lanzarote, as they are aiming to have 70% of the target population fully immunized by the end of this month.

Many people are questioning as to why some groups are taking longer than others to fully vaccinate, for example, Groups 3 and 8, especially when one of these is people aged 60-65, yet group 10 (40-49 year olds) is already over 50% fully immunised.

The simple answer is the type of vaccine being used. Group 3 and 8 are both receiving the Astra Zeneca vaccine which had a delay after the first batch had been administered, and is 12 weeks between doses (compared to 3 weeks for Pfizer and 4 weeks for Moderna), and Group 10 are predominantly the Janssen single dose vaccine, so only one is necessary.
