AEMET (the State Meteorological Agency) has activated a yellow weather warning in the Canary Islands for high temperatures expected to be above 34 degrees from tomorrow (Monday), particularly on the islands of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.
The warning comes into effect from 1.00pm and is for all of Fuerteventura, and the whole of Gran Canaria, except the north coast, but the heat will be especially noticeable in the inland areas of both islands and on the southeast slope of Gran Canaria.
In addition to this, there is another warning activated for today (Sunday) for strong winds in areas exposed to the trade winds in La Palma, La Gomera and Gran Canaria.
The combination of the effects of the trade winds from the north and a light calima from the east is causing these weather warnings, and mean today will be generally clear except for occasional clouds over the northern coasts of the more mountainous islands, getting cloudier later in the afternoon.
There will be a light haze over Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and the east coast of Gran Canaria, with wind from the east and northeast, which will be more intense on the southeast and northwest slopes of the islands with greater relief where there could be strong gusts.
Very strong gusts of wind are expected in the exposed areas of La Palma, La Gomera and Gran Canaria, hence the weather warning, and in the early hours on the western slope of Fuerteventura.
Temperatures will rise slightly today and could exceed 30°C in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and the south of Fuerteventura.
