Lanzarote wines crowned among the best in the world
Lanzarote’s wines have once again shone on the world stage, bringing home two Grand Gold Medals and two Gold Medals at the 33rd edition of the Mondial des Vins Extrêmes, held in the Aosta Valley, Italy. This renowned competition celebrates wines produced in some of the most challenging vineyard conditions on the planet.
Bodegas Martinón was awarded a Grand Gold Medal for its Martinón Blanco Seco 2024, while Bodegas Vega de Yuco also received a Grand Gold Medal for its Malvasía Volcánica sobre lías Princesa Gara 2022. A Grand Gold Medal is the highest distinction given in the competition, reserved for wines scoring above 92 points and considered outstanding even within the gold standard.
Meanwhile, Bodega Erupción secured two Gold Medals for its Milagro de Magmasía Colección 2022 and its Chinija Salvaje Blanco Seco 2024.
The Mondial des Vins Extrêmes is considered the world’s most important competition for wines produced in mountainous, steep-slope or volcanic regions, where vineyards face some of the harshest conditions. Lanzarote’s participation and success show us the island’s standing as a benchmark for “heroic viticulture”, with its vines grown in volcanic soils under extreme conditions.
Growing grapes in Lanzarote is no easy task; it’s all done by hand, using traditional techniques, and takes a huge amount of care and effort, with each harvest seen as a true achievement.
Jorge Rodríguez, president of the Lanzarote Wine Regulatory Council (DOP Vinos de Lanzarote), said: “These awards are a source of pride for the entire island and a recognition of the commitment of our winemakers and growers. Lanzarote shows, once again, that its wines are not only capable of overcoming extreme conditions, but also of delighting the most demanding palates in the world.”
He added that these new awards help strengthen Lanzarote’s identity as “true ambassadors of a unique landscape and a winemaking tradition that, generation after generation, continues to conquer international markets and juries.”
