The Spanish Met Office (AEMET) has issued a yellow weather warning for the Canary Islands this Sunday, with moderate and at times persistent rainfall expected in the northern mid-altitude areas of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and La Palma. Strong north-westerly winds, with powerful gusts in exposed and high-altitude areas, are also forecast across the entire archipelago.

Rain will be less frequent in the south of these islands, while Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are expected to see mostly cloudy skies with occasional light showers and some clearer intervals later in the day.

Temperatures will remain stable or rise slightly. Winds will blow moderately from the northwest, shifting to a northerly direction later in the day and becoming strong in exposed areas, particularly on the eastern and western sides of the mountainous islands and at higher elevations.

Choppy Seas Expected

Maritime conditions will also worsen. Winds from the north or northeast will reach Force 5 or 6, with rough seas and swell from the northwest reaching heights of 3 to 4 metres.

Here is a breakdown of AEMET’s forecast for each island:

TENERIFE
Cloudy in the north with light to moderate rain, sometimes heavy and persistent in intermediate zones. Elsewhere, cloudy intervals with the possibility of isolated light showers. Temperatures steady or slightly rising. Light frost possible at high altitudes near Mount Teide. Strong north-westerly winds shifting to northerly, particularly intense on the Dorsal Ridge, far west, and exposed southwestern coasts. On Teide, winds from the north may reach 90 km/h, and gusts in high-altitude areas could exceed 100 km/h.
General temperature range: Low of 15°C and highs of 21°C.

GRAN CANARIA
Cloudy in the north with light to moderate rain, occasionally heavy and persistent in mid-altitude zones. Elsewhere, cloud cover increasing from midday with a chance of light showers, improving by nightfall. Temperatures stable or slightly higher. Moderate north-westerly winds shifting to northerly, strong in exposed areas with very strong gusts on the northeast, southwest, west, and east coasts. In the highlands, strong northerly winds may exceed 80 km/h.
General temperature range: Low of 16°C and highs of 21°C.

LANZAROTE
Mostly cloudy until the afternoon, with light and occasional showers. Cloud intervals later, with the chance of a weak, isolated shower.
Temperatures steady. Strong north-westerly winds with very strong gusts in exposed areas, potentially reaching 80 km/h, easing and turning northerly in the afternoon, though strong gusts may persist.
General temperature range: Low of 15°C and highs of 20°C.

FUERTEVENTURA
Cloudy skies through the afternoon with occasional, generally weak showers. Clearer spells developing later. Temperatures unchanged. Strong north-westerly winds with the likelihood of very strong gusts early in the day, especially in the north, inland areas, and Jandía. Winds will ease and turn northerly in the afternoon.
General temperature range: Low of 15°C and highs of 20°C.
