The calima is forecast to spread across the Canary Islands today, Sunday, with significant dust haze and a notable rise in temperatures, according to the latest information from AEMET.
The dust will first appear in mid-altitude areas before reaching the coasts, moving from east to west and affecting the eastern and southern areas of the islands most heavily. Daytime temperatures are expected to climb, and in some places could reach around 30°C.
Light to moderate easterly winds are expected on the coasts, while in the highlands and midlands winds will blow from the southeast, sometimes strengthening. In interior parts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, very strong gusts are possible during the central hours of the day.
At sea, conditions include northeasterly winds, slight to moderate seas, and a 2–3 metre northwest swell. Calima will also reduce visibility in the coastal waters of La Gomera, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura.
