Up to 34°C, haze at altitude and strong gusts of wind this Friday in the Canary Islands

Residents and visitors to the Canary Islands are advised to prepare for intense heat, strong winds, and light haze in the atmosphere today, Friday, as according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), temperatures will rise as high as 34°C in some areas. At the same time, a calima, dust in the air from the Sahara, is expected to affect higher altitudes.

The General Directorate of Emergencies has declared a wind pre-alert throughout the Canary Islands, which is added to the pre-alert for coastal phenomena affecting Tenerife, the western islands, and Gran Canaria, and a third pre-alert, in this case only in Gran Canaria due to high temperatures.

Today’s forecast for each island:

Gran Canaria:

The highest temperatures, reaching up to 34°C, will be inland in the southern parts of the island. Northern areas will experience cloudy skies, while the rest of the island will remain mostly clear. Winds will be moderate to strong, particularly along the southeastern and northwestern slopes. Coastal areas in the southwest will experience light breezes.
Expected general temperatures: 22°C (min) / 27°C (max)

Tenerife:

Temperatures inland are expected to reach between 30°C and 32°C, with some areas potentially exceeding these values. The northern part of the island will see partly cloudy skies, while the south and other regions remain clear. There is a slight chance of high-altitude haze during the first half of the day. Strong gusts of wind are expected in southeastern and northwestern areas.
Expected general temperatures: 23°C (min) / 29°C (max)

Lanzarote:

The island will experience a mix of cloudy and clear skies, with the south and southeast seeing mostly sunny weather. Temperatures will decrease slightly in the south, and there is a chance of light calima at higher altitudes in the morning.
Expected general temperatures: 22°C (min) / 28°C (max)

Fuerteventura:

The weather will be mostly clear, with some cloudiness in the northern and eastern areas during the morning. Slight dust haze in high altitudes may also appear early in the day. Winds will remain moderate.
Expected general temperatures: 21°C (min) / 27°C (max)

Sea Conditions:

The eastern and northeastern coastlines of the islands will experience rough seas, with waves reaching up to 2 metres. Strong waves are expected offshore in the northwest and southeast, while calmer waters will be found along the northeast and western coasts.

These weather conditions, characterized by high temperatures, calima, and strong winds, are typical for the Canary Islands during this time of year. Visitors and residents are advised to take precautions, especially in areas where wind gusts may be particularly strong, and to stay hydrated during the hotter periods of the day.
