The woman accused in connection with the death of a newborn baby found in a hospital bathroom in Maspalomas has been sent to prison without bail, following a court hearing in the south of Gran Canaria.

According to the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Canarias (TSJC), the court in San Bartolomé de Tirajana ordered her immediate placement in provisional custody, as they believe she is a flight risk.

The woman has been formally charged with murder after allegedly giving birth to a baby girl in the bathroom of a hospital in southern Gran Canaria on 3rd January. The baby was found dead shortly afterwards. Prosecutors are considering whether the charge applies due to the circumstances of the death or because the victim was especially vulnerable due to her age.

According to court officials, the woman was arrested the following day and given a medical exam. Doctors established that she had recently given birth. Police have also taken statements from hospital staff, several of whom said they were aware that the woman was pregnant.

In Spain, a murder conviction can carry a prison sentence of up to 25 years, while cases involving particularly vulnerable victims, such as newborn babies, can lead to a life sentence subject to later review. The case remains under active judicial investigation. The court will continue gathering evidence and witness statements before deciding whether the case proceeds to trial.
