The Guardia Civil have arrested two people accused of carrying out a wave of robberies from hire cars across Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The pair are suspected of breaking into at least 24 vehicles and attempting a further seven thefts, mostly in tourist zones.
They allegedly took advantage of moments when visitors left their cars unattended, smashing windows to steal valuables such as bags, wallets, cameras, and mobile phones from inside. The investigation began after police noticed a sharp rise in reports of thefts from car parks commonly used by holidaymakers.
In response, officers set up a special surveillance operation in the affected areas, which led to the identification and arrest of the two suspects on 17th September 2025.
Officers found several personal belongings inside the suspects’ vehicle. After checking the items, the police confirmed that they had been stolen from tourists at different locations across both islands. Most of the recovered items have since been returned to their rightful owners.
The detainees were brought before the Court of Duty in Arrecife.
Authorities are once again urging both residents and visitors not to leave valuables in plain sight inside their vehicles. If you must leave belongings behind, store them in the boot before arriving at your parking spot, and make sure no one sees you doing so.
Police also advise double-checking that all doors and windows are securely closed, and not to rely solely on remote locking systems, as frequency inhibitors can sometimes block the signal and prevent the car from locking properly.
