The Guardia Civil have arrested a man in Corralejo, Fuerteventura, accused of stealing a tourist’s purse and two rings worth an estimated €6,800 from a holiday rental property in the town, while she was asleep inside the apartment.
The arrest forms part of Operation Cintillos, launched after the victim filed a report on 18th January 2026 stating that her purse and two rings had been taken while she slept inside the property. According to investigators, the suspect is believed to have entered without forcing any doors or windows.
The holidaymaker only realised what had happened when she began receiving alerts from her bank about several suspicious charges made with her stolen cards.
This prompted officers to begin tracing the transactions and analysing CCTV footage from the shops where the unauthorised payments were made, all located in Puerto del Rosario. From the images, they were able to identify the suspected thief.
The Guardia Civil say that support from the National Police was crucial, as the suspect is a well-known repeat offender. After confirming his identity through statements and a photographic line-up, officers noted that the clothing he wore while using the cards matched what appeared on CCTV near the holiday home. A distinctive cap proved key to linking him to the theft.
Between the night of 19th January and the morning of 20th January, officers located the suspect in Puerto del Rosario. During the intervention they recovered one of the stolen rings, a gold piece set with precious stones and several rubies, which the victim immediately recognised as hers.
The suspect and the case file have now been passed to the duty court in Puerto del Rosario. He was released on charges on 22nd January.
