The sky over the Canary Islands will put on a spectacular show this Wednesday, 5th November, when the Hunter’s Supermoon appears in all its glory. It will be the largest and brightest full moon of 2025, shining with exceptional intensity over the Atlantic and lighting up the autumn nights across the islands.

This rare event happens when the full moon coincides with its closest point to Earth, known as the perigee. As a result, it will look about 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual, and will be easy to see without any special equipment.

The Supermoon will rise above the horizon at around 5:20 pm and reach its closest point to Earth at about 10:00 pm, when it will be around 356,800 kilometres away. During this time, it will appear as a huge glowing silver disc in the night sky. Early risers will also be able to enjoy it again before sunrise, between 6:00 and 6:20 am, when it starts to set.

The name Hunter’s Moon dates back hundreds of years. It was traditionally used by northern communities for the full moon that comes after the Harvest Moon, when hunters made use of the bright light to track animals more easily. In 2025, this event once again falls in November, something that won’t happen again until 2028.

The Canary Islands are one of the best places in the world to enjoy this phenomenon. Thanks to their clear skies and low light pollution, the islands are recognised as a Starlight Reserve, meaning they’re perfect for stargazing and observing the night sky.

On La Palma, the viewpoints at Roque de los Muchachos and Los Andenes offer unbeatable views, while Tenerife’s Teide National Park is another fantastic spot for skywatching. In Gran Canaria, viewpoints such as Pico de las Nieves or Roque Bentayga also provide ideal locations to enjoy the sight.

Astronomy experts recommend going to areas away from bright city lights to get the best view, whether that’s a quiet beach, a mountain viewpoint, or a rural area.

The Hunter’s Supermoon of 2025 promises to be one of the most magical nights of the year, giving everyone in the Canaries the chance to see the moon at its biggest, brightest, and most beautiful.
