A total of 171 earthquakes were recorded in the Canary Islands in September, as reported by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) in its monthly monitoring report.
This figure represents one of the lowest seismicity levels in the past year, following the 165 tremors recorded in August. Only 20 small earthquakes were registered in La Palma, which is the lowest figure since the eruption started over two years ago.
The highest magnitude earthquake of the past month was recorded at 3.3 magnitude on the Richter scale, in the early hours of September 5th at a depth of 29 kilometres to the southwest of El Hierro. Remarkably, due to its proximity, this earthquake was not felt by the population.
