The Calima continues to haze the Canary Islands' landscape this Wednesday

Linking the days leading up to Christmas in the Canary Islands with cold and rain is currently not on the forecast. Just over 10 days before Christmas Eve, the archipelago is under a pre-alert situation due to the presence of a "calima", a dust and sand-laden wind that often affects the region from the Sahara.

Due to this situation, the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Directorate General of Emergencies, has declared a pre-alert for this phenomenon which is expected to persist until tomorrow, Thursday, December 14th.

As reported yesterday, the concentrations of suspended of between 100 and 150ug/m3, micrograms per cubic metre, may cause health issues for people with chronic or respiratory diseases such as asthma. At the same time, visibility may be reduced to 4,000-5,000 metres, although this hasn’t affected any flights as yet.

Meanwhile, skies will be partly cloudy or clear today (Wednesday) in the Canary Islands, where the calima is expected to continue and may be even more intense in the eastern province. Additionally, slight increases in maximum temperatures are forecast, according to the AEMET.
