Tenerife records coldest temperature in Spain with snow on Teide

Tenerife has recorded the lowest temperature in Spain as Storm Therese continues to sweep across the Canary Islands. According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the weather station at Izaña, in Teide National Park, dropped to -4.5°C at 1:00am this morning (Thursday), making it the coldest point in the country.

This puts Tenerife ahead of mainland mountain areas and ski resorts such as Sierra Nevada in Granada (-4.4°C) and Port Ainé in Lleida (-3.4°C).

Freezing conditions across the islands

It wasn’t just Tenerife feeling the cold. Other high-altitude areas in the Canary Islands also recorded sub-zero temperatures, including:

  • Roque de los Muchachos (La Palma): -3.2°C
  • Cañadas del Teide (La Orotava): -2.8°C

Strong winds batter higher ground

The strongest winds in Spain were also recorded in the Canary Islands.

At Izaña, gusts reached 88 km/h, while Vallehermoso (La Gomera) saw winds of up to 86 km/h.

Average wind speeds were also high, with Vallehermoso recording 64 km/h, followed by Izaña at 51 km/h.

Heavy rain in the smaller western islands

Storm Therese has also brought significant rainfall, particularly to the western islands.

In La Palma, the highest rainfall totals so far include:

  • El Paso: 13.8 mm
  • Puntagorda: 11.8 mm
  • Tijarafe: 8.8 mm

Meanwhile, in La Gomera:

  • Alto Igualero (Vallehermoso): 8.6 mm
  • Arure: 8.4 mm

Strong winds impact Gran Canaria

In the eastern province, strong gusts have also been recorded in Gran Canaria, including:

  • Cruz de Tejeda: 74 km/h
  • Vega de San Mateo: 67 km/h

Ongoing weather warnings

Storm Therese continues to bring a mix of cold temperatures, strong winds and heavy rain across the islands, with further disruption expected.

Residents and visitors are advised to keep up to date with official weather warnings and take care, particularly in exposed and high-altitude areas.
