The Canary Islands have been hit by a major telecommunications outage tonight (Monday), disrupting mobile and fixed internet services as well as voice calls. The extent and full impact of the incident are yet to be determined.
The disruption began unevenly across the islands from midday on Monday, with significant difficulties reported by users of the Movistar, Jazztel and Orange networks. By approximately 8:30pm local time, the outage had become more widespread.
Reports from affected customers indicate that Orange and Jazztel users began experiencing loss of service as early as 3:00pm, while disruptions for Movistar clients commenced somewhat later. Although there are now early signs of recovery for some users, complete resolution of the issues across all networks has not yet been achieved.
Crucially, the Canary Islands have maintained their electricity supply throughout the incident. Unlike mainland Spain, which experienced a widespread blackout earlier in the day severely impacting telecommunications, the archipelago has so far avoided a similar collapse of its electrical infrastructure.
The Government of the Canary Islands has issued urgent warnings and continues to monitor the situation closely, advising the public to remain informed through official channels.
