Red alerts are activated for fires with two more outbreaks in Tenerife and Gran Canaria

The Canary Islands Government has activated a red alert for all of the islands, except Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, with the emergency services already stretched due to sending resources to La Palma to help battle a fire that started just after one o’clock this morning but is now spreading fast due to the weather and dry conditions.

The heat, dryness of the land, and now the wind is making it more difficult than usual for firefighters as the conditions are perfect for fires, known as the Three30s:
· Temperatures above 30°C.
· Humidity below 30%.
· Wind above 30km/h.

As well as the blaze in La Palma, two more fires have been reported by the emergency services in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

In Tenerife, an outbreak of fire in Tenerife has been declared this afternoon (Saturday) in the municipality of Arafo under the Chivisaya viewpoint.

Various extinguishing means are already deployed at the site, including an L4 helicopter and two forest agents.
