Paraglider seriously injured in Fuerteventura
A 37-year-old man has been seriously injured after suffering a paragliding accident on Playa del Viejo Rey, located in the coastal area of La Pared, in the municipality of Pájara, Fuerteventura.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning, when the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received an alert at around 11:50am reporting that a paraglider had crashed and required urgent medical attention.
Witnesses at the scene alerted emergency services after seeing the man fall while practising the popular adventure sport, which attracts many enthusiasts to the cliffs and beaches of the island’s rugged southwest coast. The area, while renowned for its strong winds and stunning scenery, can be hazardous due to sudden gusts and limited access for rescue teams.
According to CECOES, lifeguards stationed nearby were the first to reach the injured man. They provided initial medical assistance, stabilising him at the scene. However, the steep terrain and lack of road access made it impossible for ambulances to approach directly.
Once the man was immobilised, rescuers carefully moved him to a more accessible point where medical teams from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) were waiting. After being assessed and treated for multiple serious injuries (politrauma), he was transferred by advanced life-support ambulance to Fuerteventura General Hospital for further care.
Local Police and Guardia Civil officers also attended the scene to assist with coordination and to gather information about the circumstances of the accident. The man’s condition remains serious, and no further details about his identity have been released.
La Pared is a well-known spot for paragliding and other aerial sports due to its ideal wind conditions, but authorities regularly remind visitors and residents to take precautions and to ensure that equipment and weather conditions are suitable before flying.
