OFFICIAL: Free public transport in the Canary Islands from 1st January 2025

The Canary Islands Government has confirmed the conditions for accessing free public transport, a measure set to benefit thousands of residents across the archipelago starting 1st January 2025. This initiative aims to alleviate transport costs for residents, encourage the use of collective transport, and reduce the environmental impact in the region.

From the beginning of the new year, regular users of public transport, including buses and trams, will enjoy fully subsidised travel, provided they meet the necessary criteria established by the regional authorities.

Who is Eligible?

The programme targets frequent users of regular land-based public transport services. To qualify, individuals must fulfil the following conditions:

1.    Residency: Applicants must be registered residents in one of the islands within the Canary archipelago.

2.    Subscription Requirement: Users will need to acquire either a monthly or annual travel pass. While the cost of these passes will be fully subsidised, residents must ensure their personalised travel cards are updated with valid information.

3.    Minimum Usage: The scheme is designed for frequent travellers, requiring a minimum number of journeys per month to maintain eligibility.

How to Apply?

Residents can apply for the free travel passes through the official websites of transport providers such as Guaguas Municipales, Global, and Metropolitano de Tenerife. Applications can also be processed at physical offices of these operators.

The system is scheduled to go live this week with additional support in place for those who may encounter difficulties during the registration process. María Fernández, the Director General of Transport for the Canary Islands, has emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition to the new scheme.

Benefits of the Initiative

The free public transport programme is expected to bring significant advantages to both residents and the environment. Key benefits include:

  • Economic Relief: Reducing transportation expenses for thousands of families and individuals.
  • Reduced Traffic Congestion: Encouraging a shift away from private vehicles, thereby easing road congestion.
  • Environmental Impact: Cutting greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable, eco-friendly mobility.

Preparations and Recommendations

Authorities are urging residents to apply for their travel cards as soon as possible to avoid delays or overcrowding at application centres. Transport routes and service frequencies will be enhanced to meet the anticipated rise in demand.

This programme places the Canary Islands among the pioneering regions in Spain to implement free public transport, representing a significant step towards inclusive and sustainable urban mobility. As the scheme launches, it is expected to set a benchmark for other regions aiming to promote environmental and economic sustainability.
