New health centre planned for Las Torres
The Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) and Las Palmas City Council in Gran Canaria are working together to identify public land in Las Torres to build a new health centre, as the recently expanded Guanarteme facility is already struggling to cope with demand.
The Guanarteme health centre is the largest in Gran Canaria and serves more than 51,000 residents, a number expected to rise sharply due to the construction of new housing in the area.
Although an extension was completed in 2024, adding an extra floor with 12 new consulting rooms for doctors and nurses, health officials warn that further space is urgently needed for emergency care and administration.
Carlos Jorge, manager of Primary Care in Gran Canaria, explained today ( Monday) that the SCS views a new health centre in Las Torres as “essential” to meet the growing demand. He noted that, even with the expansion, Guanarteme will be unable to absorb the “huge” increase in patients over the coming years.
Regional Health Minister Esther Monzón also highlighted the intense pressure currently being felt at Guanarteme, stating that plans for additional facilities, including one at the former Estadio Insular, remain a priority for the health service.
The project for Las Torres is expected to take four to five years to complete. However, preliminary work will begin immediately with the City Council to secure a suitable plot of public land.
Las Palmas mayor Carolina Darias has pledged the council’s “maximum cooperation”, stating: “We have plenty of municipal land available to put at the disposal of the Canary Islands Government, and we will collaborate fully in everything that helps improve the lives of our citizens.”
The announcement is part of a broader effort to expand healthcare infrastructure in Gran Canaria, ensuring access to medical services keeps pace with population growth and the island’s busy visitor numbers.
