The Policia Local de Canarias have shared some images on social media of new signs that are to be used around the islands to warn people of the dangers of using mobile phones whilst driving.
As you can see they have icons for various platforms with cars smashed into them, as more and more accidents are being caused by drivers distracted by using their phones.
In the past accidents were because drivers were holding phones for a call, but these days many are messaging, looking at Facebook, or searching the internet whilst driving, not only taking one hand off the steering wheel but also their eyes off the road.
In Spain, which includes the Canary Islands, only blue tooth hands-free units are legal in cars for calls (NOT in-ear pods or headphones), and it is illegal to hold your mobile phone when driving, even if you are not using it, which not only has a fine but also points on your licence.
