Maspalomas Carnival Parade cancelled due to Storm Therese
The main parade of the Maspalomas Carnival has been postponed due to severe weather caused by Storm Therese, with strong winds, heavy rain and rough seas affecting the Islands this week.
The Grand Parade, originally scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday 21st March, will now take place next weekend on Saturday 28th March.
San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Hall confirmed the decision was made in line with regional safety alerts issued by the Canary Islands Government. Local emergency plans were also activated to ensure the safety of residents, visitors and event participants.
Several other events have been rescheduled, with the main carnival celebrations now concentrated between 25th and 29th March. Organisers say the changes are necessary due to ongoing adverse weather conditions across the south of Gran Canaria.
The updated programme will begin on Wednesday (25th March) with the popular Drag Gala at 9:00pm. The following day, Thursday 26th March, will see the Carnival Dog Show take place from 5:00pm.
On Friday (27th March), events include the Rescue of the Sardine at midday on Maspalomas Beach, followed by the Tourist Gala at 9:00pm in the Yumbo Centre. Night-time festivities will continue with music and entertainment from 11:00pm.
The rescheduled Grand Parade will take centre stage on Saturday 28th March from 5:00pm, followed by late-night celebrations with live performances and DJs.
Festivities will conclude on Sunday 29th March with the traditional Burial of the Sardine at 7pm, ending at Playa del Inglés. The carnival will close with a tribute concert to Juan Luis Guerra at 9:00pm.
