A man in Gran Canaria is being investigated over allegations of domestic violence and the violent deaths of at least four dogs, according to the police.

The investigation began in January after the man’s partner filed a domestic violence complaint in Telde, a municipality on the east coast of the island. During police enquiries, she reportedly told officers that the man had shown violent behaviour towards animals inside the family home, leaving relatives fearful for their safety.

Officers from the National Police Family and Women’s Unit worked alongside the Guardia Civil´s nature protection division to investigate the claims. Detectives later gathered evidence suggesting the suspect had allegedly killed at least four dogs using repeated blows with a blunt object.

Police believe the animals’ bodies were later buried on land next to the property in an attempt to conceal what had happened.

Authorities said the case is being treated as a continuing offence involving both animal cruelty and domestic abuse. Once the investigation was completed, the suspect was placed before the relevant judicial authorities.

Animal abuse is a criminal offence in Spain and can carry prison sentences as well as bans on owning animals.
