Canary Islands residents and visitors can expect a mixed start to the week, with cloudier skies, the chance of light rain in the north of several islands, and a noticeable wind-chill in exposed areas, according to forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
AEMET is forecasting intervals of cloud, with a chance of occasional, generally light showers on the northern sides of the islands today, Monday, most likely during the early hours. Temperatures should see little overall change, although there may be a slight rise, particularly in some mid-altitude areas on northern slopes.
Despite the mild coastal feel typical for the time of year, AEMET also warns of light frost on high ground, especially on the summits of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and La Palma. This is most relevant for anyone planning early hikes, sunrise trips, or driving in and around higher elevations where temperatures can dip sharply overnight.
Winds will be predominantly from the north, with stronger gusts at times, most notably on east and west-facing slopes of the mountainous islands and on exposed summits. In practical terms, this can mean blustery conditions at viewpoints and ridgelines, and stronger crosswinds on more open roads.
Sea conditions and coastal outlook
For beachgoers, swimmers and anyone heading out by boat, the sea state looks lively, particularly in open waters.
AEMET forecasts north to north-easterly winds, force 4 to 6, bringing rough seas, easing later to moderate or slight-to-moderate conditions. There will also be a north or north-westerly swell of 2 to 3 metres, gradually reducing to 1 to 2 metres from the north or north-east.
Showers are also expected in coastal waters around Tenerife, La Gomera, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, as well as in the channels Anaga–Agaete and Jandía–La Isleta—areas that can feel particularly changeable when wind and swell combine.
Island-by-island forecast for Monday 15th November:
LANZAROTE
Cloudy intervals, with a chance of occasional rain during the early hours. Slight rise in temperatures. North to north-westerly winds.
General temperature range: 16°C to 21°C.
FUERTEVENTURA
Cloudy intervals, with a chance of scattered, occasional rain during the early hours. Slight rise in temperatures. North to north-westerly winds.
General temperature range: 16°C to 22°C.
GRAN CANARIA
Cloudy intervals, with a chance of rain in the north and east during the first half of the day. Temperatures with little change or a slight rise. Light frost is possible on the summits. North to north-westerly winds, locally strong at times on east and west slopes and exposed high ground.
General temperature range: 18°C to 22°C.
TENERIFE
Cloudy intervals, with a chance of rain in the north, especially during the early hours. Temperatures largely steady, although higher daytime temperatures are possible in mid-altitude areas on northern slopes. Light frost is possible at higher elevations. Northerly winds, locally strong at times on east and west slopes and summits.
General temperature range: 16°C to 23°C.
Practical advice for tourists and residents
- Pack a light waterproof if you’ll be out early or in the north of the islands. Showers are expected to be light, but can be sudden.
- Consider an extra layer for evening walks and higher-altitude trips—wind can make it feel cooler than the thermometer suggests.
- Take extra care on exposed coasts: rougher seas and swell can make rocky shorelines and natural pools more hazardous.
- If heading to high ground, plan for colder conditions and the possibility of patchy frost around summits.
