The Canary Islands are set for another sweltering day today, Monday, with the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasting calima (dust haze) and extreme heat across the archipelago. Maximum temperatures will reach 37°C in most islands, climbing to 40°C in parts of Gran Canaria.
Minimum night-time temperatures will remain unusually high, hovering between 25°C and 27°C in the central and eastern islands.
Hazy Skies and Intense Heat
Skies will be generally clear, but the calima will be most noticeable in higher and mid-altitude areas, with Lanzarote and Fuerteventura experiencing the dust haze down to sea level. The combination of heat and suspended dust is expected to reduce visibility and create an oppressive atmosphere.
Strong Winds in Exposed Areas
Moderate northerly winds will prevail, occasionally strengthening in exposed coastal and highland areas. Some gusts could be very strong, particularly in the east and west of Gran Canaria, and in the northeast and west of Tenerife.
Marine Conditions
At sea, northern or north-westerly winds of force 3 to 5 are expected, shifting to easterly or south-easterly in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Conditions will range from slight to moderate seas, increasing to rough waters off Gran Canaria’s coast. Calima will also affect marine visibility around all islands.
Island-by-Island Forecast
LANZAROTE:
Clear skies, except for some clouds along the west coast. Significant calima to surface level. Maximums of 37°C inland east, possibly hitting 40°C in localised areas. Minimums up to 26°C. Light variable winds becoming moderate north-westerly, occasionally strong in the afternoon.
FUERTEVENTURA:
Similar to Lanzarote, with possible 40°C peaks in the east of the island. Calima to sea level, affecting visibility.
GRAN CANARIA:
Clear skies except for some northern coastal cloud. Extreme heat in the interior south and Tejeda basin, exceeding 40°C. Night-time lows up to 27°C in these areas.
TENERIFE:
Clear skies except for some clouds in the north. Up to 37°C in southern and western slopes, 34°C in northern midlands. Lows up to 26°C in the southern midlands.
Health and Safety Advice
Authorities urge residents and tourists to limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours (12:00pm–5:00pm), drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, and avoid strenuous exercise. Those with respiratory issues should take extra care due to the dust haze.
