The Canary Islands are set to experience varied weather conditions today, Friday, with rain expected in parts of Tenerife and the western islands, whereas there is light haze forecast for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, according to the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET).
AEMET say that rain is likely to affect the northern slopes of the more mountainous islands, such as Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and La Palma, with heavy showers this afternoon in these areas.
Meanwhile, light calima – a fine dust haze from the Sahara – is expected in the eastern islands, with a chance of it reaching Gran Canaria later on this afternoon.
This change in weather comes as a DANA (isolated high-altitude depression) approaches the archipelago from the Atlantic, potentially influencing the conditions over the weekend.
Skies will generally be partly cloudy across the region, with little change in temperatures, though slight increases in maximum temperatures are forecast for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Winds will be from the northeast, becoming lighter throughout the morning.
Island Forecasts for Friday:
LANZAROTE:
Skies will be mostly clear or slightly cloudy, with low cloud in the west during the morning. A light calima is expected. Minimum temperatures will remain steady, while maximums may rise slightly. Northeasterly winds will ease, shifting to a light northerly breeze in the afternoon.
Expected temperature range: 17°C – 23°C
FUERTEVENTURA:
Clear or slightly cloudy skies with some low cloud in the west during the morning. Light calima expected. Temperatures will remain largely unchanged, with slight increases possible in the eastern half. Winds will ease from the northeast, turning light from the north in the afternoon.
Expected temperature range: 16°C – 22°C
GRAN CANARIA:
Partly cloudy conditions are expected, with cloudier skies in the north where occasional rain showers are likely, especially early in the day. Light calima is probable in the afternoon. Temperatures will remain stable. Winds from the northeast will become lighter and variable during the morning.
Expected temperature range: 17°C – 21°C
TENERIFE:
Partly cloudy skies will prevail, becoming cloudier during the central hours of the day. Rain is forecast for northern areas and could extend, albeit lightly and occasionally, to mid-altitude eastern slopes. Expected temperature range: 17°C – 22°C
