Flight delays and cancellations to and from the UK due to fog

Several flights between the UK and Tenerife were cancelled or delayed yesterday (Saturday) due to dense fog impacting major UK cities such as London and Manchester. This caused widespread disruptions at key airports during the busy final weekend of 2024, coinciding with the Christmas holiday travel peak.

On Friday night, a flight bound for London was abruptly cancelled after passengers had already boarded. Yesterday, two more flights were cancelled: one to Heathrow Airport and another to Gatwick Airport, originally scheduled for 5:40am.

These are high-capacity flights, resulting in a considerable number of passengers being affected by the disruptions.

Busy Operations at Canary Islands Airports

The cancellations and delays come amidst one of the busiest times of the year at airports in the Canary Islands. AENA has projected that 3,052 flights will operate across the Canary Islands this weekend, an increase of 462 flights compared to the same period in 2023.

During the extended Christmas holiday season, spanning from December 20th to January 7th, a total of 25,212 flights have been scheduled in the Canary Islands, a 20.42% increase compared to the previous year, reflecting the popularity of the archipelago as a travel destination during the festive season.

The unforeseen disruptions caused by the UK weather conditions underline the complexities of maintaining smooth operations during this period. Passengers are advised to stay in close contact with their airlines for updates on flight statuses.
