FRIDAY WEATHER: Heavy rain, storms, strong winds and hail in the Canary Islands
Servitaxi Tenesur SL

Persistent and heavy rain will dominate western and southern parts of the Canary Islands today, Friday, as Storm Therese continues to affect the archipelago, according to latest forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

The unsettled conditions are expected to intensify later in the day, with thunderstorms and hail forecast in several areas. On Tenerife, more snow is expected above 2,000 metres, rising to around 2,500 metres by the afternoon. Strong winds will also be a significant feature, with gusts of up to 100 km/h possible in higher altitudes and exposed areas.

Rough Seas and Hazardous Coastal Conditions

At sea, conditions will deteriorate throughout the day. South-westerly winds of force 4 to 5 will strengthen to force 6 along north-west and south-east coasts, bringing increasingly rough seas. Overnight, winds may reach force 6 to 7, with very rough conditions developing.

A north-westerly swell of 3 to 5 metres is expected, accompanied by heavy showers and thunderstorms. In contrast, north-east coasts will see lighter, variable winds and slight seas.

Due to this water sports, boat trips, diving, and other sea-based activities or excursions will be cancelled in affected areas.

Island-by-island forecast for Friday 20th March 2026:

The west and south-west will see persistent and occasionally heavy rain, especially early and later in the day. Elsewhere, scattered showers in the morning will give way to more widespread rain by the afternoon, with possible thunderstorms and small hail. Snow is expected above 2,000 metres. Temperatures will increase slightly, with light frost possible on central peaks. Very strong winds in exposed areas, with gusts over 90 km/h in higher areas.
General temperature range: Low of 18°C and high of 23°C.

Gran Canaria
Heavy and persistent rain is expected in the west and south, with occasional showers elsewhere. Northern and eastern areas will see clearer spells from midday. Temperatures remain steady or rise slightly, especially inland and in the north-east. Strong winds with very strong gusts, particularly in high areas and exposed slopes. Gusts may exceed 90 km/h.
General temperature range: Low of 19°C and high of 24°C.

Lanzarote
Cloudy skies with light to moderate rain, occasionally heavy in places. Conditions will improve from midday, with clearer skies. Temperatures will rise slightly, with little change during the day. Strong south-westerly winds with very strong gusts will ease later.
General temperature range: Low of 18°C and high of 21°C.

Fuerteventura
Similar conditions to Lanzarote, with cloudy skies and periods of rain, potentially heavy at times. Improvement expected from midday. Slight rise in minimum temperatures, with stable daytime highs. Strong winds easing during the afternoon.
General temperature range: Low of 18°C and high of 21°C.

Storm Therese is expected to bring unsettled and potentially hazardous conditions across the islands, particularly in elevated and coastal areas. Residents and visitors are advised to take extra care, especially when travelling or engaging in outdoor activities.
