The town of Marín in Galicia, in the north of Spain, is a paradise with an idyllic picture postcard beach called Playa Santo do Mar, that in addition to having crystal clear calm waters and delicate white sand, offers you the opportunity to buy your very own island.
Just off the coast, accessible by water or across a sandy walkway, when the tide is out, sits the island of Santo do Mar or San Clemente, a 3,000 square metre piece of paradise that can be bought for just 300,000 euros.
The island is home to a natural and rugged landscape, whose land is protected. Although this means it can’t be built on, it is home to an old 40m2 chapel, which could have been part of a larger building in the past, that can be renovated and used.
As you approach it, there is a simple entrance door with a lintel and a gabled roof can be seen on the facade of the chapel, which reveals a decorative flagstone floor, but what stands out above all is the niche of the altar that is in the shape of a semicircular arch.
Santo do Mar beach is the main attraction of the island, a beach that is just 350 metres long that is located within the Ría, which protects it from the open sea and offers one of the quietest places to sunbathe in Spain.
At low tide, you can access the island on foot via a narrow corridor of sand, known as an isthmus, which connects it to the coast. However, the island of Santo do Mar is not the only place of beauty on the landscape, as you can also see the islets of Pinela and Esqueiriño.
