The Spanish Directorate General for Traffic (DGT) has withdrawn official approval for four V16 emergency beacon models that, until now, were being sold normally. The decision comes just as these devices are becoming mandatory in all vehicles, meaning the affected models may no longer be marketed.

The V16 beacons that have lost their certification are: Don Feliz V16IoT, The Boutique For Your Car V16IoT, Ikrea V16IoT, and Call SOS (model XL-HZ-001-VC). The first three are manufactured in China, while the latter is produced in Spain. The withdrawal affects sales only; motorists who already own these devices can continue using them without issue.

According to the DGT, the loss of approval is due to administrative reasons rather than technical faults. In some cases, companies requested the withdrawal themselves; in others, certification expired without renewal applications.

Can these V16 beacons still be used?

Consumer group FACUA emphasises that drivers who already have any of these models can continue using them safely, as they meet the required technical specifications. They remind motorists that the DGT’s website provides an up-to-date list of certified V16 devices.

FACUA has also warned about the ongoing sale of V16 beacons that lack mandatory connectivity to the DGT, a requirement that becomes compulsory from early 2026. The organisation has reported several online platforms to the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030 for selling non-compliant products without clearly stating that they will not be valid under the new regulations.

In checks carried out in December, FACUA found that Amazon, AliExpress, and Leroy Merlin were still offering products marketed as “approved by the DGT”, despite not specifying whether their approval remained valid.

The association also criticised the fact that these devices can be sold carrying an official approval mark without indicating on their label or marketing materials that they do not meet the upcoming connectivity requirements.
