Covid update: 872 new cases and 12 deaths in the Canary Islands

The Ministry of Health of the Canary Islands has provisionally reported 872 new cases of coronavirus in the archipelago today, taking the total number of accumulated cases in the Islands is 270,567 since the pandemic began. There are still 105,646 active, of which 72 are admitted to ICU and 483 are hospitalized in wards, which is a drop of 5% over the last 24 hours.

In the last 24 hours, the deaths of 12 people have been reported: seven in Gran Canaria, three in Tenerife, one in Fuerteventura and one in La Palma, which are pending validation by the General Directorate of Public Health as it is the weekend.

The downward trend is continuing in the Islands, and the incidence rate over 7 days in the Canary Islands has now dropped to 249.36 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and to 584.39 cases over 14 days.

The rates in each of the islands is continuing to drop too, and Lanzarote has the lowest IA7 of 182.27 followed by Tenerife with 203.42. In fact, the good news is that the four biggest islands have the lowest rates, and the three smaller islands have the highest.

This is good news as the rates drop slower the bigger the population is, so the data indicates that the downward trend is now consolidated and under control, hence the relaxation of restrictions this week.
