A cold front classified as “very active” by Spain’s Meteorological Agency (AEMET) is set to sweep across the Canary Islands on Christmas Eve (24th December) and Christmas Day (25th December), bringing widespread rain and unsettled weather.

The system, which is also affecting mainland Spain, is expected to deliver light to moderate rainfall across the archipelago, with the potential for heavy showers in the north of the more mountainous islands and in the western isles.

Christmas Eve forecast

AEMET anticipates increasing instability from the second half of Christmas Eve onwards. Extremely strong north-westerly gusts are expected on the summits of Tenerife, intensifying as the day progresses.

During the morning, cloudy intervals are forecast in northern areas of the larger islands and across the eastern islands, while clearer skies will prevail elsewhere. Later in the afternoon, cloud cover will build across much of the archipelago, becoming overcast particularly in northern and western slopes and in Lanzarote.

Rainfall is expected to be light to moderate overall, though it could become more intense and persistent in northern Tenerife. Southern-facing areas will see less rain, and any showers there are likely to be weaker.

Temperatures will remain steady, with highs reaching around 22°C in both provincial capitals.
