The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) is forecasting a day of mixed weather across the Canary Islands for today, Sunday, the last day of August, with cloudy intervals, occasional light showers, and strong trade winds in exposed areas.
In the north of the larger islands, cloud cover will be more frequent, with the possibility of weak, scattered rainfall, especially in mid-altitude areas during the early hours. Elsewhere in the archipelago, skies will generally remain clear or slightly cloudy.
Temperatures are expected to remain stable, though a slight rise in maximums is possible on the southern and western slopes of some islands.
Island by island forecast
LANZAROTE & FUERTEVENTURA:
Mostly clear skies, though cloudier in the north and west at the beginning and end of the day. Strong trade winds will affect exposed areas, particularly the southeast of Lanzarote and the south of Jandía. Temperatures will remain steady, with highs around 28°C.
GRAN CANARIA:
Predominantly sunny with some cloud in the north, where light rain is possible in the midlands during the morning. Southern coastal areas could see temperatures rising above 26°C. Winds will be strong, with occasional very strong gusts on the southeast and northwest slopes.
TENERIFE:
Cloudier in the north, with possible light rain in the midlands of the northeast early in the morning. The east of the island will be mostly clear, with temperatures reaching up to 29°C in Santa Cruz. Stronger gusts of wind are likely in the southeast and far northwest.
La Gomera:
Generally clear skies, but with more cloud in the north and occasional light rain in the midlands. A slight rise in maximum temperatures is expected in the south. Winds will strengthen later in the day, particularly in the southeast, northwest, and mountain areas.
La Palma:
Cloudy in the north and east with the chance of light rain during the morning. Temperatures will rise slightly in mid-altitude areas, while light breezes will dominate along the western coast. Strong winds are expected on southeast and northwest slopes, with potentially very strong gusts.
El Hierro:
Mostly clear with some cloud in the north at the beginning and end of the day. Light showers are possible in the northeast midlands. Maximum temperatures will remain close to 26°C, while strong trade winds will affect exposed areas in the southeast and northwest.
At sea
Winds from the north or northeast will blow at force 4 to 6, generating moderate to rough seas, with a swell from the north or northwest reaching between 1 and 2 metres.
What this means for you
Tourists and residents can expect a mix of sunshine and cloud this Sunday, with the best beach weather on the southern coasts of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura. Those heading north or into the mountains should be prepared for occasional light showers and cloudier skies. Strong trade winds may affect hiking routes in exposed areas and create rough sea conditions, so caution is advised for sailing, windsurfing, or boat excursions.
