The Canary Islands are set to experience a relatively moderate increase in sea temperature over the coming decades, according to scientists from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC). Research suggests that by 2050, the waters around the archipelago may warm by less than 1°C – far lower than in many other parts of the world.
Pedro Vélez, a researcher at the Canary Islands Oceanographic Centre, explained that this is “a relatively modest level of warming compared to what is being observed globally,” offering some reassurance for residents, visitors, and the tourism sector that depends so heavily on the ocean.
The findings come from the first research campaign carried out in Canarian waters by the institute’s new research vessel Odón de Buen. Over 12 days, scientists collected samples around the islands and in nearby Atlantic waters, studying currents, marine life, and microplastics.
While even small increases in sea temperature can affect ecosystems, the results suggest that the Canary Islands may be spared the more dramatic ocean warming predicted in other regions. This could help protect the islands’ rich marine biodiversity, from plankton and fish larvae such as sardines and tuna, to larger species that draw divers and wildlife enthusiasts.
The research also highlighted the importance of the Canary Current, which plays a key role in transporting nutrients and supporting marine life. Scientists emphasise that careful monitoring will continue to ensure the long-term protection of the local environment.
For tourists and residents alike, the news is encouraging: the Canary Islands’ surrounding seas are expected to remain relatively stable, supporting both healthy marine ecosystems and the activities that make the islands such a popular destination, from beach holidays to diving, fishing, and whale watching.
