Canary Islands airports report lowest punctuality in Spain: One in four flights delayed

Airports in the Canary Islands have recorded the lowest punctuality rates in Spain during the first quarter of 2025, according to data released by passenger rights organisation AirHelp.

Tenerife South, Lanzarote, and Gran Canaria airports ranked at the bottom of the list, with punctuality rates of just 72.7%, 73.6%, and 73.7%, respectively. This means that more than one in four flights at these major holiday destinations experienced delays.

Despite the setbacks, the Canary Islands remain one of Spain’s most sought-after holiday locations, continuing to attract large numbers of visitors.

Nationwide, approximately 4.5 million air passengers were affected by delays between January and March. However, 82% of all flights across Spain still managed to operate on time, indicating that while delays were frequent, they did not represent the majority of journeys.

Among those impacted, around 339,700 passengers were eligible for financial compensation under European regulations. These cases typically involved significant disruptions, such as delays exceeding three hours, flight cancellations, or missed connections.

While the three main Canary Islands airports struggled with punctuality, Menorca Airport stood out for its efficiency. With 94.3% of its flights departing on time, it was Spain’s most punctual airport during the same period.
