The Canary Islands have long been a proud outpost of Spanish football, represented by two historic clubs, UD Las Palmas from Gran Canaria and CD Tenerife from Tenerife. These two fierce rivals have experienced plenty of highs and lows over the decades, and during the 2025/26 season, their paths have diverged dramatically.
While Las Palmas are mounting a strong promotion challenge in the Segunda División, Tenerife are battling to rebuild in Spain’s Primera Federación. Still, both clubs carry the hopes of Canarian football fans, who dream of top-flight representation once again.
For fans looking to follow their progress, or even place a wager, many are turning to the best free bet offers available online to back their favourite island side’s promotion push.
UD Las Palmas: Strong promotion contenders
After suffering relegation from La Liga at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, finishing 19th following a 0-1 defeat to Sevilla in May, UD Las Palmas have responded with resilience and quality. Under the guidance of Luis García, the team have regrouped impressively in Spain’s second tier.
As of October 2025, Las Palmas sit in second place in the Segunda División, having collected 18 points from 10 matches (5 wins, 3 draws, 2 losses). They trail only leaders Racing de Santander by a single point and are level on points with Cádiz in third. Their form over the past month has been particularly impressive, including victories against Cádiz (1-0), Eibar (3-1), Leganés (1-0), and an away win at Córdoba (3-1).
Veteran playmaker Jonathan Viera, who returned to his boyhood club in July, has been instrumental. At 36 years old, his leadership and technical ability continue to inspire a young squad hungry for redemption. The team’s defensive record has also been outstanding, with only six goals conceded in 10 matches, a testament to their disciplined, possession-based approach under García.
With automatic promotion awarded to the top two teams in Segunda, Las Palmas find themselves in a prime position. Their blend of La Liga experience, defensive stability, and attacking efficiency has made them one of the division’s most consistent performers. Statistically, they’re averaging 2.17 points per game over their last six matches, the best run in the league.
If Las Palmas maintain this momentum, they are well on course for an immediate return to La Liga. Even if they slip into the playoffs, their experience and tactical maturity should give them an edge. Many fans, and those using a free bet to back them, will feel confident that Las Palmas are destined to rejoin Spain’s elite for the 2026/27 season.
CD Tenerife: Rebuilding in the third tier
While their island rivals chase promotion glory, CD Tenerife find themselves on a very different journey. After 12 consecutive seasons in the Segunda División, Tenerife were relegated to Primera Federación at the end of 2024/25, finishing 20th with just eight wins.
Yet, their response has been emphatic. Now leading Primera Federación Group 1, Tenerife have made a blistering start to life in the third tier. With 19 points from eight matches, they top a competitive group of 20 teams. Their attacking form has been eye-catching, 16 goals scored and only 4 conceded, while forward Jesús de Miguel has already bagged five goals, including a brace in a statement 3-1 win over Real Madrid Castilla.
Tenerife’s focus this season is singular, returning to Segunda División. With only the group champions gaining automatic promotion and teams from 2nd to 5th entering the playoffs, the path is challenging but achievable. Their early dominance suggests a real chance of bouncing back at the first attempt.
Given their current form, Tenerife are genuine contenders for promotion. However, the long 40-match season means consistency will be key. Even if they fall short of the automatic spot, they have the quality to succeed through the playoffs. Still, La Liga football remains at least two seasons away, even in the most optimistic scenario.
