CD Tenerife marked their return to Spain’s Segunda División in style yesterday, Friday, beating Barakaldo CF 2–0 in front of a Heliodoro Stadium packed with 20,000 fans that was rocking from start to finish.
The celebrations had already begun before kick-off as news filtered through that Celta Fortuna had lost to Osasuna Promesas, confirming Tenerife as champions and sealing automatic promotion. By the time referee Pol Arenas blew his whistle, the stadium was in full voice.
Fast Start from the Champions
Despite the party atmosphere, manager Álvaro Cervera’s side began with real intent. Early chances fell to Noel López and Fabricio inside the opening ten minutes, forcing Barakaldo into defensive reshuffles to steady themselves and stem the early surge.
Once the Basque side tightened their lines, they grew into the game and began creating problems of their own. Arana came closest with an acrobatic effort that failed to find the target, while goalkeeper Dani Martín was called into action to prevent what looked like a certain goal from a dangerous cross.
Pedernales also had two golden opportunities. In one, he failed to square the ball for a simple finish on the half-hour mark, and shortly after delivered a superb cross that Mandiang narrowly missed by inches.
Tenerife attempted to respond before the break. Dani Fernández produced a fine solo run but shot wide with his weaker foot, and Fabricio fired off target just before half-time.
Gallego Strikes Again

The breakthrough arrived early in the second half. Juanjo Sánchez injected extra tempo, and in the 49th minute Noel López burst forward on the counter. His perfectly timed pass found league top scorer Enric Gallego, who calmly slotted home his 17th goal of the season to make it 1–0.
With the crowd roaring them on, Tenerife continued to push for a second. Barakaldo, to their credit, refused to surrender and even pinned the hosts back for a spell, neutralising several attacks and threatening an equaliser.
But it was Tenerife who struck decisively on the break. Balde delivered a teasing cross that left Dani Fernández clear, though his heavy touch denied him. Maikel Mesa reacted quickest, smashing the loose ball into the net before racing off to celebrate with the jubilant home support.
Promotion Party in Full Swing
From first whistle to final celebrations, the Heliodoro was awash with blue and white. Supporters had come to witness history, the long-awaited return to Spain’s second tier, and they were rewarded not just with promotion, but with victory.
For Tenerife, it was the perfect way to mark their comeback to the Segunda División: champions, promoted, and celebrating together with their fans, the first time since 1987 they have witnessed promotion at home.
The party then continued in the Plaza de España as the streets of Santa Cruz were awash with blue and white as the city partied into the night.
