The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has forecast a day of varied weather across the Canary Islands this Boxing Day (Thursday). The outlook includes clear skies in some areas, light rain in the north of the islands, and the potential for heavy showers and storms during the early hours in certain regions.
Haze is expected to reduce visibility in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, while temperatures are set to drop slightly in these two islands and Gran Canaria.
Skies will be largely clear this morning, but in northern parts of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and La Palma, evolving cloud cover could result in light rain later in the afternoon, following heavy rain during the night.
Temperatures are forecast to range from a cool 12 °C in Valverde (El Hierro) to 24 °C in the south of Tenerife, with chillier conditions in elevated areas.
Light winds will prevail, primarily from the south in mid-altitude and mountainous areas, while Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will experience stronger southeastern winds throughout the day.
At sea, variable winds could reach Force 5 or 6 near Lanzarote, bringing choppy waters and waves up to 2 metres due to northern swells. Occasional downpours and storms are possible along some coastal regions.
GRAN CANARIA AND TENERIFE: Intermittent cloud cover in the north, with the chance of light rain during the afternoon. Light haze in Gran Canaria.
LANZAROTE AND FUERTEVENTURA: Mostly clear skies but with intense haze that could significantly limit visibility.
LA PALMA, LA GOMERA, AND EL HIERRO: Cloud buildup in interior areas, with the possibility of locally heavy showers during the early part of the day.
AEMET advises caution and recommends avoiding outdoor activities in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura that could be affected by the haze. For the mountainous islands, residents and visitors should stay alert to potential rain and storms in elevated areas.
