ARRESTED: Parents whose eleven-month-old baby was intoxicated by cannabis

A 42-year-old man has been arrested after his eleven-month-old daughter was admitted to hospital in critical condition for cannabis intoxication in Marbella. The baby girl’s mother has also been arrested for her part in the events and accused of child abandonment.

The National Police have reported that the incident took place last Wednesday when a medical examination of the girl showed that she had ingested the substance after her parents took her to hospital.

According to the report, they sought medical help because she presented symptoms of cyanosis and had a bluish colour to her skin, lips, and nails caused by a shortage of oxygen in the blood.

Everything indicates that the incident is accidental, the paediatrician who treated the baby reported it to the police, but that doesn’t take away any of the responsibility from the parents.

When the parents took the poorly baby to a hospital, staff activated the protocol that exists for drug cases, meaning officers went straight to the emergency department of the hospital and arrested the father of the child, and then the mother when she arrived not long afterwards.

Following their arrest, a search of their home, to determine living conditions for the child, police officers found several drug containers with hashish in them.

The little girl is still admitted to the hospital for routine observation, although she is conscious and expected to make a full recovery.

The case has been transferred to the Investigating Court number 2 of Marbella for sentencing.
