The National Geographic Institute (IGN) have confirmed that they registered a 2.6 magnitude earthquake in El Hierro last night (Thursday), just southwest of the municipality of El Pinar, that was felt by residents.
The seismic movement took place at 8:51pm, registering a magnitude of 2.6 on the Richter scale at a depth of 32 kilometres beneath the seabed, with its epicentre located offshore.
Officials confirmed the precise location at latitude 27.6645 and longitude -18.0237. Due to its magnitude, the earthquake is classified as minor and did not cause any material damage, or pose any safety risk.
The Canary Islands regularly experience low-level seismic activity due to their volcanic nature. Recent monitoring has also detected increased seismic movement around Mount Teide in Tenerife, although authorities stress there is no cause for alarm.
