Two Irishmen arrested in Tenerife for robberies they made up for insurance claims

The National Police have arrested two Irishmen at Tenerife airport, both aged 25, after they reported two independent crimes to the police in Arona, one a robbery in the apartment they were staying at, and the other for having a mobile phone stolen, so that they could have police reports for their insurance company, but both incidents turned out to be made up.

The police started an investigation into the complaints after finding contradictions in their statements for the two crimes, which supposedly occurred on the 20th of this month, talking to the complex they were staying at, who had no record of the incident.

Police also found that the mobile phone that the two Irishmen claimed had been stolen, was active in a normal way, which is unusual if stolen.

After passing the information on to the National Police station at Reina Sofia airport, the two were apprehended and police found that they did indeed have the phone, which determined that the events had not happened.

Based on the evidence obtained, the two were arrested when they were about to leave the country and were charged accordingly, with all the paperwork and facts reported to the corresponding Guard Court in Ireland.
